Collection: Chemex

Filter coffee as an object. The Chemex was invented in 1941 by the chemist Peter Schlumbohm: an hourglass of heat-resistant glass, held in a wooden collar with a leather tie, so beautiful that it has been part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York for decades. A piece of laboratory equipment that became a design classic.

Its filters are noticeably thicker than ordinary ones: they hold back oils and sediment and let through a cup of rare clarity, bright, precise, almost like tea. That is exactly why it belongs with us: for our single-origin coffees as whole beans, the Chemex is the instrument that tells terroirs apart most clearly. Slow coffee, full control, and an object that is allowed to stay on the table.
