Where coffee is at home.

Guji, Ethiopia — for many the best coffee region in the country, perhaps in the world.

Here, near Shakiso at around 2'200 metres, lies the Golden Farm: 78 hectares of forest where coffee grows the way it came into being — in the shade of trees over forty metres tall.

The living earth

It is no coincidence that coffee was born in precisely such Ethiopian forests: their undergrowth, their fungi, their humus form the living rhizosphere that gives a coffee structure and complexity.

We took over the farm in 2024 — a few days before the harvest. It had always been farmed organically and is now in biodynamic conversion.

The gold of Shakiso

The Golden Farm is run by Fitsum Bekere; the coffees score over 87 points from the Specialty Coffee Association.

And the name? Shakiso lies in one of Ethiopia's best-known gold regions. At the lower end of our land runs a stream where gold prospectors often stand — whoever owns soil here could seek their fortune beneath it: dig, clear, wash.

We chose the other gold: the one that ripens above the ground — in the shade, slowly, new every year. The forest stays standing, the stream stays clear. There is gold you dig for, and gold that grows. Ours grows.
