35 hectares of life.

When we first set foot on this piece of land at 1'900 metres in Junín, Peru, we were greeted by swarms of silver-blue butterflies. The name was settled: Mariposa.

In the meantime the land has become a farm — but one you would rather call an ecosystem: 35 hectares, 25 of them under coffee, 3 as untouched wild reserve, and 7 for everything a farm needs to live — the beneficio (our “wine cellar” for coffee), the compost facilities, the housing, the animals.

From monoculture to ecosystem

When we took over this land, one thing stood here above all: eucalyptus. A single planted forest — fast-grown, silent, without diversity.

We turned it back: around forty tree species planted, and among them, in the shade, over twelve Arabica varieties, farmed biodynamically, Demeter-certified. And nature answered: with the diversity, the birds came back, species by species.

Mariposa is run by Héctor Luis Marin — a farmer by passion who knows his region like few others — and a team of fourteen people.

Experimenting as with wine

And because we come from wine, we experiment here as in a chai: with fermentations in egg-shaped tanks, with slow drying, with everything that coaxes even more expression out of a terroir. Each year this yields a handful of coffees that exist exactly once.
